In a comical turn of events, a burglar in China found himself caught red-handed when he decided to take a nap mid-robbery, prompting the homeowner to alert her family and the police.
The incident unfolded in Yunnan province, where the intruder, identified as Mr Yang, entered a house but got spooked by voices, prompting him to take refuge in a separate room. However, after smoking a cigar, he succumbed to drowsiness and fell asleep.
The homeowner, Ms Tang, initially dismissed the loud snoring as noise from a neighbour’s house but grew suspicious when the sounds persisted and intensified. Upon investigation, she discovered the unexpected guest, Mr. Yang, peacefully asleep on the floor in another room. Ms Tang promptly contacted her family and the police, leading to the arrest of the intruder.
Authorities disclosed that Mr Yang had a history of criminal activities, having been jailed for theft in 2022. Released in September, he resumed his illicit activities, ultimately leading to his latest arrest. The case is currently under investigation.
The amusing incident gained attention on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, with users expressing amusement at the burglar’s predicament.
Some mocked him, with one user stating, “This is too funny. The thief brought the police to his doorstep.” Another user quipped, “If he was so tired, maybe he should not have ‘worked’ overtime.”
In a similar case reported by SCMP, a thief in China’s Jiangxi province faced detention after falling asleep under a homeowner’s bed during a robbery. The unconventional behaviour of criminals seems to be drawing attention and amusement across social media platforms in China.
