Pakistan faced a resounding defeat at the hands of India in the 2023 Asia Cup Super 4 match in Colombo on Monday. The defeat was nothing short of a humiliation, with Pakistan losing by a staggering margin of 228 runs.
While talking to India Today, Gavaskar didn’t hold back in his criticism of Pakistan’s batting.
“In cricket, there are no ifs and buts. But the way Pakistan batted today, it seemed India would have been able to defend 266 the other day if the game (1st match) had carried on. You know people, particularly in Pakistan, keep on talking about India having only one or two players. I mean how many players does Pakistan have? Particularly in the batting department. Apart from Babar who do they have?” Sunil Gavaskar questioned.
“When the bowling team of the opposition sit down and dissects their batting, they would spend a lot of time on how to get Babar out. But I don’t think they would spend half the time on the others. None of them are such that they would scare the bowling group of the opposition team,” he added.
In response to India’s imposing total of 356 runs, the national team could only muster 128 runs in 32 overs, marking it as India’s most significant victory in One Day International (ODI) cricket against Pakistan.
This loss ranks as Pakistan’s second-worst defeat in ODI history, with the previous record being a 234-run loss to Sri Lanka in 2009.
It’s worth noting that due to persistent rain and a damaged outfield, the crucial match between Pakistan and India in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup was rescheduled from Sunday to Monday.
