Usama trumps Zaman as Rapids knock Falcons out of Vitality Blast

The Worcestershire Rapids triumphed over the Derbyshire Falcons by 28 runs on Sunday at Derby, securing a place in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals and eliminating the Falcons from the tournament.

Opting to bat first, the Rapids got off to a strong start, reaching 70 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. Jack Haynes and Mitchell Santner showcased aggressive batting, forming a valuable partnership of 72 runs off 55 balls. However, Zaman Khan bowled a swinging yorker to dismiss Haynes and conceded a mere three runs in the 13th over. Khan’s death bowling skills were commendable as he went on to trap Ben Cox lbw in his final over, finishing with impressive figures of 2/29 in his four-over spell. He emerged as the most economical fast bowler in a high-scoring match where over 400 runs were scored.

Santner, on the other hand, played a sensational innings, smashing 64 runs off just 46 balls, including five sixes. His aggressive batting helped the Rapids reach a formidable total of 222 for 5.

Chasing a mammoth target, Derbyshire Falcons faced early setbacks, losing two wickets within the powerplay, including the dismissal of Haider Ali, who managed only five runs from four deliveries. Wayne Madsen and Harry Came then combined forces to construct a crucial partnership of 72 runs. However, Usama Mir provided the much-needed breakthrough, outfoxing Came and getting him stumped for 43.

Mir continued to make an impact in his next over, further damaging the Falcons’ hopes by dismissing their captain, Leus du Plooy, for a mere 8 runs. Despite Madsen’s valiant effort, scoring a quick-fire 63 from just 32 balls, the Falcons were eventually bowled out for 194. Pat Brown played a pivotal role in the Rapids’ bowling attack, taking three wickets for 35 runs, while Mir contributed with three wickets for 38 runs.
